Parenting. It is the most important responsibility in this world and yet no one has figured out how to do it perfectly. It's unfortunate that there are no foolproof parenting manuals that come with written guarantees to reassure us that our beloved children will turn out flawless.
However, there is One who knows our children even better than we do and the instructions He gives us to raise them are above reproach. Among His many words of wisdom is the Lord’s advice, to all parents, to be model examples for our children. What does that mean? It means that we, ourselves, are to live righteously before them - according to the Word of God - so that our actions will reflect the integrity and importance of our teaching before the Lord. Furthermore, God advises us to teach our children the uncompromised truth - also according to the Word of God - and to raise them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. By the way, contrary to popular belief, truth is not subjective.
Understanding our solemn duty as parents ought to provoke a certain amount of fear and trembling - both in parents and in our children. Unfortunately, though, this is clearly not the case in this day and age.
Well, I don’t know about you, but I definitely needed (and still need) help from the Lord. It’s a good thing He knew I would long before I came along which is why He sent me Jesus. I’m pretty happy about that because without His mercy and grace to cover both me and my children when I didn't have a clue, I could honestly say that I would have failed at this thing called ‘parenting.’ However, God had my back. You see, He uses ALL things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Amen for that.
Now, this might very well have been the end of this story, but God has a sense of humor. Now, my children are having children… (smile) and the manual for perfect parenting still does not exist. But God does (smile). His word is still above reproach and the advice He gives is still perfect. In fact, His Word is TRUTH. It is a foolproof, written guarantee.
So, to all you imperfect people who think you're pretty good at this parenting thing, I hope God is TRULY with you! I sincerely hope so. If He is, without a doubt you and your children are blessed. No matter what, your lives will be so much better for it.
But as for everyone else, I can give you this advice from my own humble pre-Christ experience: When all else fails (and it will), remember Jesus is still offering you (and your children) His mercy and His grace. Trust me, you're going to need it. My prayer is that you and yours will receive this precious gift before it’s too late!
